Momma’s Angel

Every now and then life gets interesting

About a year ago, Tim and I were closing up our apartment in Norway. The movers had come, we cleaned up, sold off stuff, and were staying in an Opera apartment. Sara Ellen was tiny. Here is a photo soon after getting home, a photo of her with Tim and with me. We hoped to crash at my parent’s for just a few months. Well, it’s been almost 12 now and it will be a few more.

Part of me continues to miss having our own home. A new country, with interesting people and places to visit, and our own apartment which we ran as we saw fit. But I always remember how lonely I often was, and how far away we were from family who couldn’t see our new addition.

In all this time Sara Ellen scooted, crawled, cruised, walked, and now runs. She is even plopping or climbing backwards down the stairs. And we finally have gates at both stairways on the main floor! She is now tall and able enough to to reach and pull open doors with lever handles. This was a big problem with the basement because it’s well-used by people and cats, so locks wouldn’t work. Until this week we barricaded it but whenever someone went down, the block had to be fixed. She is saying something like “momma” and “daddy” but those words get applied to all kinds of things, people, real or photographed, animals, etc. She points at the ceiling a lot. Has gone back to eating her toes. She can climb safely off our bed. She loves emptying and refilling, dancing (boy does she boogie - so much fun!), looking at books, picking up gumbballs outside, seeing dogs. She used to just watch me brush and floss, now she wants to do it too. She even likes washing her hands. She knows where the paper recycling goes, and copies my hand gesture which she understands for “gone”, “finished”, or “done”. She also understands lots of words, hug, kiss, yogurt, cheese, up, and probably more. I have introduced her to the church nursery because running around the small chapel and collecting pencils during church has become too distracting. She had wonderful relationships with the adults in her life. She sees other children during La Leche League meetings. We usually attend the 11am sunday service and there aren’t many kids in the nursery, but I learned the children’s education director has her two daughters there every other week.

Tim is still working for Opera Software. Right now has him in a strange position but I’ll let him explain. He is also doing volunteer work for a website that uses the webhost he is familiar with. He practices handbells at church once a week a rings during church once a month. Tonight he is off to host an Opera User Group in Silver Spring. We see his mother about once a month and his dad’s family about once a week.

I have been rehearsing for our June recital, and should begin learning my solo in the next few weeks. I’m really excited and the two so far are going very well. I became an Independent Mary Kay Consultant a couple weeks ago. I’m slow starting, mostly because it takes money to make money. My first party is this Saturday though I helped my director/pastor’s wife give homeless men and women facials at Calvary’s Winter Relief on Sunday. Motherhood is my biggest and best job, and the most challenging in so many ways, emotionally, physically, and in the time it requires. I’ve learned what baby (and mom) clothes are easiest for us, what products are unneeded, and some which might be useful. I’ve learned you should avoid an episiotomy during if at all possible. I’ve learned how crucial it is to our, yes our happiness that I have alone-time! I have happily reached 140 lbs, gradually, but would like more toning by doing the workout I learned at the chiropractors.

Life would be quite different if we had our own home, but I’d like to. I also want to do well with my new business, without being a pushy saleswoman. Are you happy with your skin care? Looking for fun new cosmetic colors? ;-) Seriously.

Climber February 20, 2007

We have a climber!

While visiting with Tim’s sister Jennifer on Saturday, Sara Ellen pulled herself across and up onto the coffee table. It is probably waist height for her, narrow but longish. She was up and down, loving it.

The other evening while I brushed my teeth, she climbed onto the toilet. I have stood her on the lid before and today she tried again with frustrating results. Right now, she is trying to get onto a low-seated dining chair next to the computer. She can quite get on yet, I’m guessing because she can’t slide over it, but she learned to get off.

Home, v. 2

Filed under: Uncategorized — Rebekah @ 3:43 pm

Just so you know, I’ve met our new neighbor. Her name is Elizabeth and she is very nice. She has an accent, my guess is Spanish (European). Last week when our power was out, Tim went out to move a branch that was across the street and helped move her downed branches as well. I decided to use the opportunity to introduce myself and Sara Ellen to her, Mom had met her previously. We all, except for Michael and Emily, gathered and talked. She enthusiastically offered her fire place to us for warmth.

She told Mom when they met that she is in a “separation situation”. She must be on the way to divorce but doing ok (financially) for herself to have bought a house. She has two young sons who go between this new home and their father nearby. She has been slowly filling her new home with furniture and gadgets. She bought a new tv but didn’t break down the box so the recycling picker-upers didn’t take it. I think her next step should be curtains. :-)

Ann Hutchinson Guest Examines Nijinsky’s Famous Ballet

Filed under: Dance, Events & Issues — Rebekah @ 3:22 pm

“Ann Hutchinson Guest, internationally celebrated as the foremost authority on dance notation, will present a free public lecture on Vaslav Nijinsky’s famous ballet “L’Après-midi d’un Faune” on Saturday, February 24 at 3 p.m. in Goucher College’s Merrick Lecture Hall.

Guest will share the historical background of this much-discussed ballet, along with Nijinsky’s production notes and notation system. She will analyze the choreographic style of the ballet, and relate the research problems encountered in the transcription, revival, and translation of the dance into Labanotation. Guest is uniquely qualified to speak on this topic—working with Claudia Jeschke in 1987; Guest deciphered Nijinsky’s system of dance notation.”

I thought this was a presentation about dance notation, how to use it, but this sounds interesting anyway. Nijinsky’s Faune is a unique ballet, and the lecturer will examine his notes, etc. so perhaps it will be like a lecture on notation using this ballet as an example.

Home February 9, 2007

I’m sad. The house my old postman lived in, the house across the street, has new owners. It’s not us.

It’s been on the market since maybe September after having a good deal of work done on it. There hasn’t been a whole lot of interest, but it only takes one. There was actually another interested party, us. We just don’t have to finances to back it up. I’m not sure what it went for, but it was listed for $439,000ish. It’s pretty much just like my parents house, which we’re living but a little smaller. And it has been sitting there staring at me.

In my imagination it would have been perfect, living across the street from my family. We would have an agreement of when we can freely visit.

My consolation is 1) that God knows what we need and I guess this isn’t it, not now, and 2) that it may not be the right house for us, the right one will come along.

It became the perfect house because I wanted it. I didn’t think so at first because it doesn’t have everything I want, but it is a nice house. There is a master bedroom, not very big with a small walk-in closet and tiny bathroom with shower. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and another bath, with a tub. I was thinking of taking an idea from my cousins home and make the bathroom bigger. It would connect the hallway and master bed. The backyard does not get much light but is a good size. Just needs shade plants. I was thinking we could negotiate the price to work in more changes, etc.

Oh well, I hope the lady living there enjoys her new Value City furniture.

I had hoped a resident would solve my sadness but no, I just wish it were us.

Growing February 5, 2007

It’s funny how babies/kids/people develop at their own pace.

Sara Ellen and I went to La Leche League this morning. There was a little girl there I’ve seen getting bigger, who just had her first birthday. The mom, Jessica, said Isabella had taken 14 steps at the most. Sara Ellen did that at 10 1/2 months. At 12 months, she was walking consistently. However, when Isabella eats solid food, she always feeds herself. This is different from Sara Ellen who sometimes feeds herself, usually with her fingers, and often I still help feed her.

Sookie again

Filed under: Reviews — Rebekah @ 3:25 pm

If you saw last week’s Gilmore Girls, you’d know that Sookie is pregnant a third time. Well, it’s actually Melissa McCarthy. Sookie was really moody and upset but couldn’t figure out why because Jackson was supposed to have gone through a vasectomy. It was really a pretty eventful episode and not as cute as Sookie’s 1st and 2nd.
