What’s going to happen to R- MWC? August 28, 2006

I’ve been doing more thinking about the possibility of R-MWC going coed to maintain enrollment numbers. They have recently succeeded at raising $100 million+ through the Capital Campaign, which should allieviate concerns about money. If women do so well at women’s colleges, why is this an option?

I got ideas from the College’s financial newsletter and U.S. News and World Report. Then I read the College website’s Strategic Planning information. I have read some before, but it answered my questions. As far as the donated money, not all is given in a lump sum. Some is future giving or allotted for specific purposes. Sister-class traditions were developed over time by the students. New traditions would likely emerge. One article I linked to from their site spoke about two women’s colleges, Hood and Sweet Briar, which have both had to choose what to do in this difficult situation. Hood went coed. Sweet Briar, however, made some changes, but continued being single-sex. This gives me hope that just because the researchers came up with this solution for R-MWC, does not mean that R-MWC’s Board will accept it.

Even if they do, I’m feeling a little hasty about signing the petition. I love the College and I don’t know what will happen if they do let in men, but the school will certainly change. I guess my main issues are the feel of the school, what the single-sex environment enables, and the traditions. The College is more concerned about the academic advances that are supposed to draw in students and what will get students in there to profit from those advances. I certainly care about the academic standards, but also that women not suffer from favoritism towards women in the classroom.

I don’t know what exactly makes the College “truly distinctive in the marketplace,” but I know that if I had been asked ahead of time if I would choose a single-sex institution, I don’t know that it would have been my first choice. It just worked out that way. It had good options for classes and dancing but it was only after I visited the campus that I knew it was for me. How do you market that?

A recent U.S. News & World Report featured “America’s Best Colleges.” R-MWC ranked 89th in Best Liberal Arts Colleges. The following is from Admit it: Women have a Man Problem: “As it becomes more difficult for women to gain admittance into many schools, some foresee a renaissance in unisex education…. Just because women are more represented in higher ed today doesn’t mean that their lot has improved forever…,” referencing the wage gap between lifetime earnings of men and women. Now, female high-school applicants must sell themselves more aggressively if they hope to be included in the women admitted. They may find that schools which are typically male-dominated are easier to get into, as they want to have a more equal enrollment.

Does the Board think going coed will help? Will men actually enroll? The College will have to figure out what will bring them in too.

“A problem for [Admissions Counselors], as for much of the rest of the campus, is that until about six weeks ago, many remained skeptical that the steering committee would recommend the change to coeducation. It seemed very remote and very unlikely, and thus not something that there was any reason to bring forward.” These are the words of William Coulter, a professor of English and Dean of the College, addressing this years new students who didn’t knowing how soon this change could happen.

This reflects how I felt about this issue also. I seemed much farther off, and now it’s being sprung on us all.

R-MWC Petition August 17, 2006

On September 9, 2006, THIS YEAR, the R-MWC Board of Trustees will vote whether or not to make the college co-educational!
Go to the link and sign the petition if you do not want this to happen!
The last part says “alumna or donor,” and is required. If you are not an alumna and have donated money, I suggest signing as a donor.

Do not make Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Co-ed!!!

Days 4-7: Meeting New Family August 16, 2006

Tim’s paternal family attended our wedding but aside from a few hellos, I hardly knew them. I’ve finally spent some quality, and quantity time getting to know them. It was a great time too.

Just a complaint…

I have friends who use all the different blog-hosting sites, facebook, xanga, etc. Anyone can read some public stuff but if you want to see some things, make comments, you need your own account. Ugg. I used to use xanga but deleted that account after a week or two once we set this up. I created another xanga just so I could post comments on Emily and Michael’s sites, that was more important when I was in Norway.

I got my own site because I wanted to design it my own way. I really like it, though there are things I’d like to tweak. It’s not free but with all Tim’s online stuff, it doesn’t cost us anything, except for having my own domain name. I’m not sure of all the details. He helped me put it together and I learned so I could do the upkeep myself.

New Tricks August 11, 2006

Sara Ellen has a few new tricks up her sleeve. Recently she could hold her arms/hands out. If you clapped she would take your hands and clap for you. Now… she’s also claps her own hands! Yay! And… she’s CRAWLING! Wednesday and part of Thursday she was working on getting going, pulling forward with one leg and pushing a little with the other. Now, there she goes, right for what she wants. Watch our world, and our home.

Days 1-3: Traveling Gets Too Exciting

Filed under: Events & Issues — Rebekah @ 11:18 am

From our hotel in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

I have said the same travel-specific prayer twice so far: “please get us on that train.” Both times it was answered. That’s all I asked… I did plan all our arrangements but days like the last two remind me that God is in charge, not me.

Tuesday was busy; for some reason Tim scheduled his 2nd consultation with a “2nd opinion” chiropractor for that afternoon (12:45) when we were planning to leave for DC’s Union Station at 2pm. The night before, I had finally put out clothes for Sara Ellen and so I had to figure out how much suitcase I needed and pack between daily routines. Tim did not return until after 2. We left (Mom driving) before 2:30 and actually arrived around 3:15. With very little traffic, we made good time. But we were just too late to check our belongings. The roomettes are small so we weren’t quite sure where our suitcases would go; we had been instructed to bring an overnight bag. We got on board in plenty of time and there was a luggage rack in our car, the floor below us–sleeping cars are double decker. After that, our ride was very pleasant. We hadn’t eaten much that day, so we had an early dinner. Good food (which I shared with Sara Ellen): mashed potatoes, a little ravioli and steamed broccoli. Back in our room we watched a borrowed copy (Thanks B!) of “Nanny McPhee”, which was a lot of fun. I hadn’t realized before that 1)Emma Thompson is the title character, and 2) she wrote the screenplay. We slept all right. The bunk was long enough for Tim and Sara Ellen and I did ok, though as we barrelled along through the night, I rocked back and forth while sleeping on my side.

Wednesday’s breakfast was also good, but some delays and then morning traffic got us to Chicago Union Station 4-5 hours late! We weren’t on a schedule, but we were hungry and got a bit turned around trying to find the car rental desk. We finally got a vehicle and installed car seat. Then we got a little turned around trying to get to my cousin’s home and finally arrived after 3pm. We had a nice time playing with the little kids (Miles 4 1/2, Grace 2, Jack 1). Wes was out of town so Becky was watching his two little ones. James came over later for dinner and we had a great visit! Both Becky and James promised to come East some time.

Thursday after a leisurely morning of kiddie play (and learning about the UK terror threats) we left at 1 to arrive in plenty of time to return the car and check our baggage. At least that was the plan. Our directions weren’t quite accurate and after calling James and then stopping for more help we finally made it to the train station unsure we’d ever make the train. There were no parking spots until we drove around twice and another rental finally pulled out after being inspected (sheesh). I was ready to cry, though reminded myself that God is in charge. My prayer was answered after some stress. Thankfully we just had to drop off the keys, the long line of people was for a specific train and we made it onto our train just before it left! 8O We made great time to Milwaukee and after installing another car seat, sitting in Wisconsin state fair traffic and getting lost again we made it to Tim’s Aunt Kathy’s. Though I met his family at our wedding, this was the first time I’ve spent with them. It was a lot of fun and chatted with his Aunt Zalla for a while. Sara Ellen, naturally, charmed all and didn’t seem anxious meeting new people.

We’re at the Country Inn and Suites and have a nice room. A nice place for travelers to rest, refresh, and reflect on the journey and conversations. I’m looking forward to rest of our visit.

25 August 4, 2006

Happy Birthday to me! :D

It’s really kind of strange being 25. I know I have a husband and a daughter but that’s just part of me it’s not like a goal I’d planned to reach by now. I don’t think that 25 is “old” it just seems more adult, whether or not that makes sense. 25, it’s closer to 30, no longer early 20’s. We went out to dinner Sunday with Tim’s family and JP heard another dinner guest ( at Sakura you share a table with others) was 21 and said he was just a baby. I was thinking he was only 4 years younger, but it is a difference. See what I mean?

Today we’re going to a sculpture garden and then out to dinner. Hopefully we’ll get good pictures.
