Momma’s Angel

Every now and then life gets interesting

Listening June 22, 2008

Have you heard the idea of being silent before God? Spending time in prayer, not asking for things but listening to what the Lord may say to you. I find this difficult to do, not just not speaking but keeping my mind quiet. I heard an idea lately for meditation, choosing one word and focusing on it while being silent. Then you allow whatever happens to happen. Thoughts flow through your mind, memories, sadness, tiredness. I don’t think you are supposed to fall asleep. Is this one way to let God speak to me?

These days I am trying to fill our days with regular fun, interesting outtings, and restorative quiet time all while playing a waiting game of sorts. We have a time line for finding our own home, by this November/December. It’s been a long time coming. We’re pretty cramped in my parent’s home and we need room to grow and live as our own family unit. I’m ready for the adventure, whatever it is. Accepting a new place be it far or near, being willing to find a church, medical care givers, and a place to dance. And that is what I have been praying about, being ready for whatever opportunities come our ways.

Day Five November 29, 2007

It has been a pretty eventful week thus far. Emily and I have found out the dances we are doing for the recital in June. Our oldest cat, Tuxedo (14 years old), is quickly declining in health.

Monday Sara Ellen and I took a walk up to the library. We also stopped into Blockbuster to rent Ratatouille and got lunch at Subway. The whole trip took about an hour. At ballet Emily and I learned that Carol’s ballet will be Balero, an abstract ballet with a Spanish flair. Instead of this dance Katie M and I will be dancing a modern dance choreographed by Kristi to gives the other ballerinas time to change. We were originally given the choice to do this dance with Kristi and her friend who is the current jazz teacher. Now… the dance will be a duet for Katie and I!! Monday afternoon we learned that Tuxedo, who has been suffering for a while from renal/liver failure was bleeding from his mouth. I found him in the basement with red on his front paw and matted fur. He didn’t have much energy and sat in front of the water dishes while I did the litter.

Homebodies February 28, 2007

About a year ago, Tim and I were closing up our apartment in Norway. The movers had come, we cleaned up, sold off stuff, and were staying in an Opera apartment. Sara Ellen was tiny. Here is a photo soon after getting home, a photo of her with Tim and with me. We hoped to crash at my parent’s for just a few months. Well, it’s been almost 12 now and it will be a few more.

Part of me continues to miss having our own home. A new country, with interesting people and places to visit, and our own apartment which we ran as we saw fit. But I always remember how lonely I often was, and how far away we were from family who couldn’t see our new addition.

In all this time Sara Ellen scooted, crawled, cruised, walked, and now runs. She is even plopping or climbing backwards down the stairs. And we finally have gates at both stairways on the main floor! She is now tall and able enough to to reach and pull open doors with lever handles. This was a big problem with the basement because it’s well-used by people and cats, so locks wouldn’t work. Until this week we barricaded it but whenever someone went down, the block had to be fixed. She is saying something like “momma” and “daddy” but those words get applied to all kinds of things, people, real or photographed, animals, etc. She points at the ceiling a lot. Has gone back to eating her toes. She can climb safely off our bed. She loves emptying and refilling, dancing (boy does she boogie - so much fun!), looking at books, picking up gumbballs outside, seeing dogs. She used to just watch me brush and floss, now she wants to do it too. She even likes washing her hands. She knows where the paper recycling goes, and copies my hand gesture which she understands for “gone”, “finished”, or “done”. She also understands lots of words, hug, kiss, yogurt, cheese, up, and probably more. I have introduced her to the church nursery because running around the small chapel and collecting pencils during church has become too distracting. She had wonderful relationships with the adults in her life. She sees other children during La Leche League meetings. We usually attend the 11am sunday service and there aren’t many kids in the nursery, but I learned the children’s education director has her two daughters there every other week.

Tim is still working for Opera Software. Right now has him in a strange position but I’ll let him explain. He is also doing volunteer work for a website that uses the webhost he is familiar with. He practices handbells at church once a week a rings during church once a month. Tonight he is off to host an Opera User Group in Silver Spring. We see his mother about once a month and his dad’s family about once a week.

I have been rehearsing for our June recital, and should begin learning my solo in the next few weeks. I’m really excited and the two so far are going very well. I became an Independent Mary Kay Consultant a couple weeks ago. I’m slow starting, mostly because it takes money to make money. My first party is this Saturday though I helped my director/pastor’s wife give homeless men and women facials at Calvary’s Winter Relief on Sunday. Motherhood is my biggest and best job, and the most challenging in so many ways, emotionally, physically, and in the time it requires. I’ve learned what baby (and mom) clothes are easiest for us, what products are unneeded, and some which might be useful. I’ve learned you should avoid an episiotomy during if at all possible. I’ve learned how crucial it is to our, yes our happiness that I have alone-time! I have happily reached 140 lbs, gradually, but would like more toning by doing the workout I learned at the chiropractors.

Life would be quite different if we had our own home, but I’d like to. I also want to do well with my new business, without being a pushy saleswoman. Are you happy with your skin care? Looking for fun new cosmetic colors? ;-) Seriously.

Home February 9, 2007

I’m sad. The house my old postman lived in, the house across the street, has new owners. It’s not us.

It’s been on the market since maybe September after having a good deal of work done on it. There hasn’t been a whole lot of interest, but it only takes one. There was actually another interested party, us. We just don’t have to finances to back it up. I’m not sure what it went for, but it was listed for $439,000ish. It’s pretty much just like my parents house, which we’re living but a little smaller. And it has been sitting there staring at me.

In my imagination it would have been perfect, living across the street from my family. We would have an agreement of when we can freely visit.

My consolation is 1) that God knows what we need and I guess this isn’t it, not now, and 2) that it may not be the right house for us, the right one will come along.

It became the perfect house because I wanted it. I didn’t think so at first because it doesn’t have everything I want, but it is a nice house. There is a master bedroom, not very big with a small walk-in closet and tiny bathroom with shower. Upstairs are two more bedrooms and another bath, with a tub. I was thinking of taking an idea from my cousins home and make the bathroom bigger. It would connect the hallway and master bed. The backyard does not get much light but is a good size. Just needs shade plants. I was thinking we could negotiate the price to work in more changes, etc.

Oh well, I hope the lady living there enjoys her new Value City furniture.

I had hoped a resident would solve my sadness but no, I just wish it were us.

Wet Day November 16, 2006

A futuristic conversation:

“Hey, want to go swimming tomorrow?”
“Sure, at the lake that used to be Maryland?”

Last night I was listening to the classical music radio station, 91.5 with Judith Kroenig, the woman with the intriguing voice.  I heard a couple times, “100% chance of rain in Washington”.  Late this morning Sara Ellen was a little antzy and seemed to want to go outside in the crummy outdoors.  Norwegians say, “there is no bad weather, just bad clothing.”  I have tall Norwegian rain boots and a snazzy, all-weather, all-terrain stroller.  I was going to take the Baby Bjorn but that needed more clothes for Sara Ellen.  With the stroller I also needed to cover my head.  Perhaps it would have been easier to use the bjorn but I used the stroller, with it’s water-proof sleeping bag, and rain cover, and awkwardly held a big golf umbrella.  She didn’t complain at all and drifted off to sleep.  The rain came and went all day.

This afternoon I left early before my chiropractor visit and ran a few errands.  The bank for a rebate check Tim thought would never come, Tim’s doctors office to pickup a referral, and Michael’s Crafts for beading research.  At the office I did my workout (I’ve gained lots of core strength, and lost 5lbs) and got adjusted.  Afterwards, I put my stuff in the car and decided to visit The Bead Shack.  It’s an incredible store in Crofton with tons of awesome beads.  Naturally, after deciding not to return home immediately, the rain poured down.

It was pretty nerve-wracking driving home.  Davidsonville Road was nearly flooded.  I could barely see anyway, and when a car came from the other direction, water splashed over the car.  Route 50 was a little bit better, more cars but less water.

After a day like today, I’d want to relax and have the popcorn and coke I bought for last nights The Da Vinci Code movie night (I did eat the twizzlers), but  I still have ballet at 6:30.  Emily and I were supposed to have a dress rehearsal at 8:30 for the dance we’re doing at church on Sunday at 9 and 11am
(after which we head for New Hampshire), but power is out at the church.

Daily Goodness July 16, 2006

Nothing amazing is going on, except for the growing our little girl is accomplishing. She isn’t crawling yet but she’s sure getting close. She pulls herself over her feet, gets to her knees (or sometimes on her feet like she’s doing push-ups) and if the surface gives, she propells herself forward given the right motvation (i.e. UNO cards, talking puppy). She’s cruising, sort of, standing against the couch back and side-steps. She can still wear some 6-month clothing but I’ll need to shop soon for bigger things, we just bought bigger onesies yesterday.

The last few days I’ve started my day with the NYCB Workout DVD. I don’t do the whole “class” just the first 8 sections - warm-up, stretches, abdomials and floor barre. I took a couple ballet classes in the last three weeks and have decided to take two ballet classes and a modern class a week at our local studio in the fall. I’ll perform modern and hopefully ballet but it sort of depends on the level I take. If I start pointe again, I might be able to be in the advanced ballet, if I don’t I could just take the class and understudy or take a lower level and perform on soft shoe. I’ve been talking to my Illinois cousins, getting ready for our visit on our way to Wisconsin for a wedding.

We spent this afternoon with Tim’s dad and family. We’d stopped by yesterday afternoon and it occured to them after we left to invite us to dinner, so today it was pizza and the pool (pictures up soon). Then a stop by our storage unit to put in, take out and switch the stroller from baby bassinett to chair. Sara Ellen is growing too fast. Baby time is amazing and she changes so rapidly. Good part about the chair means we can just fold it down for traveling instead of removing the bassinett first (takes up lots of room). “Bad” part is that I can’t see her anymore as she’s facing forward. :( I’m looking forward to having our own place with *all* our stuff together within easy reach.

We were supposed to go to Richmond Friday evening but as we got drive-thru for dinner, the car was rumbling and then started smoking. Recently at stops the a/c hadn’t been working. After eating and some phones calls, JP brought me and Sara Ellen home while Tim waited for the tow-truck. We’ll take it in tomorrow. Tim’s mom is busy next weekend so Tim and I will have a real date and go visit the next weekend. I got a breast pump so I’ll have to practice some more and make sure Sara Ellen can get what she needs from it.

I’ll be 25 in 19 days! 8O We’re taking a day-trip to Annmarie Garden in Solomons Maryland and then will share dinner at California Pizza Kitchen.

Life Update May 12, 2006

Filed under: Events & Issues, Home — Rebekah @ 7:51 pm

We’ve been home a little more than two months now and another step of our transition here has occured - our personal belongings were delivered. All of our things are now pretty much in one place (except for boxes in the attic). It’s great but actually a little bittersweet as we close another door of sorts to the very nice place that is Norge. I’ve been in touch with friends we met there, think back to it, and look forward to visiting a foreign but familiar place.

Adjusting March 11, 2006

Filed under: Home — Rebekah @ 3:43 pm

Despite having a little room supply all our privacy, I love being with my family. There are four extra sets of arms if I need any help and it’s fun being around to know what’s going on and see people as they come and go. Before I had to sit at the computer and catch up on what was going on, but you miss things that way. Someday we’ll move into our own place and won’t have this and will have to visit. It’ll be different. As for right now, I’ll just enjoy it.

The weather is amazing. It’s too early for this warm warm weather to stick around but it’s incredible. A nice little gift after the windy cold of Norway. Yesterday it was near 80 deg F and today it’s around 70! Lots of sun with vitamin D so Sara Ellen doesn’t have to ingest the smelly fish oil.

I haven’t seen a movie in the theater since Harry Potter in November and I’ve been wondering if Munchkin could handle the noise. I think we have our answer. Last night we all went to the Variety Show at Annapolis Area Christian School. I fed her but in a little while she needed a walk as expected for that time of night. It got noisy, especially when they did their really good version of Stomp. It was great, but really noisy. Little one was crying, which you could hear between sets. So Tim took her outside the auditorium until intermission. We decided to go home and realized going to regular movies isn’t going to work. There are Movies for Moms at the mall. They play new movies every Wednesday at 11am. I checked it out and were told there aren’t many people but it keeps going. I can’t see movies that have been out for a little while but still, I like to see movies.

Apartment February 19, 2006

Filed under: Home — Rebekah @ 4:40 pm

Before I moved to Norway, Tim took pictures of a potential apartment, the one that we ended up getting from another Opera employee who moved back to Japan, the one we’re leaving in three weeks.

It seemed nice and light, a feature I really wanted but also small, especially the loft/bedroom. There are many features I didn’t consider too carefully, like the crazy round sink in the corner! I kind of wish I had but I don’t know how different our life here would have been. It doesn’t matter. Though we’ve lived in this apartment over a year, it’s always seemed like a transition place. Not much furniture, and while it’s home, doesn’t have everything we want.

Possibly our number one requirement for our next home, a dishwasher!! I also look forward to a bath tub, a real closet and/or dresser drawers, separate places for working and eating, more space for visiting and not having the tv front and center and a clothes dryer so by the time our clothes are dry it’s time to do another load. ;)

We’re selling off our stuff by bits and pieces. I really hope we can sell the bigger items too. One more week in this place, then comes packing day and we’ll take our suitcases with us to an Opera apartment. Thursday night we stay in the Radisson Hotel by the airport so we can just walk on over and not get up way early!
