Updates from Anniversary Trip
On my birthday, I updated my facebook status at every change in the day. As this event was celebrating two people I didn’t want to share all my thoughts as they happened and look into potential comments. So, I made note of them as each came to mind. Enjoy the randomness.
Driving from Santa Cruz:
“No matter how many times I’ve done it, it’s always weird driving away from Sara Ellen, leaving her with someone else. I know she’ll have fun but I want to see it happening, even when excited about getting adult time. The back and forth of attachment and independence is a curious thing.”
Driving to hotel in Carmel from Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur:
“Men are so single-minded. Meaning they give their full attention to the task at hand. My thoughts are all over the place. Tim realized during dinner that he had not thought of Sara Ellen since we left her. With so many incredible views while driving, arriving at the in, driving to the restaurant and being there, it’s no wonder. For me, she is usually in my thoughts. I’m confident she’s having a great time.”
“It’s nice being able to carry a cute little purse. With my handy camera in it, and my totally awesome phone. At dusk it’s hard to gt a shot of the hills in the light as I see them. I set it to night which means it uses more flash. I wasn’t sure it would help. It might have, if only I wasn’t in a moving vehicle trying to get the shot out of the window on a windy night.”
“The clouds are rolling in, it’s like a wall.”
Stopping along the coastal highway 1 for gorgeous scenic views:
“Incredibly windy on the cliffs. The first stop was amazing with walking paths but the next two were so windy that I stayed in the car and watched Tim’s clothes blowing in the breeze while he tried not to blow away.”
“Next time we come I might insist on the Point Sur Lighthouse tour, even if it is 3 hours.”
“Lunch at Ripplewood Resort Cafe. Can I eat a 1/3lb burger? Patty weight’s don’t mean much to me.”
“The air has smelled so fresh to me since we moved but especially down here in the wooded coastline. I love the California coast!”
A little more information, after the fact, on these updates and our trip:
Sara Ellen did have a great time at her sleepover, except when the attended a birthday party. I had completely forgotten about the party. I’f I had remembered I might have talked to her about it in conjunction with the sleepover to get her used to the idea. We think she got overwhelmed with the new location, lots of people, etc. She became quite sad and was brought back “home”. Otherwise it was awesome.
I’m not sure why the Lighthouse tour is so long. It’s like a mile long hike. I would love to explore the area and then walk up, it might take an hour guide-less.
The burger was really good! I didn’t eat the whole thing, but much of it. Used tasty shredded cheese. Tart pickle, mmm. Too many fries, I’m afraid I’m eating too much anyway, maybe it’s only exercise I lack. The Cafe was a really nice setup. We sat outdoors and the only problem was a bee investigating me. Service was good too, friendly and fast. We arrived just as the lunch menu was going to be available. I never thought I would enjoy water with lemon.
We drove a little more south and stopped at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. It was $10 to enter but the fee covered all the parks that day (like we used it). The gate keeper told us about a short path and trail to falls. Don’t believe it’s short! I don’t know how long we walked, too long, too high, too steep, heart pounding, not enough breath. I wasn’t counting on so much exercise right then. It might have been an hour, or less, but for inexperienced hikers… please don’t tell me it was a good metaphor for marriage, I’ll twitch your nose. I know, scary, but should I say I’ll punch you in the nose? The valley view wasn’t all that great, mostly trees, the road, and water far off. Pfeiffer Falls was nice, except the downhill exit trail was closed from fire damage so we had to go back up for a bit and then down again. It was a little buggy too. They flew around us whenever we rested. Thank God for shade and cool breezes. It is amazing how much one’s outlook can change was only having to control your descent, not propel yourself up. We headed back after that, worn out, sweaty, and in need of naps, I think I took one in the car. It was a nice getaway, I’m hoping we get to do a little bit longer one in the future.
