Visiting the Doctor

I guess I’ve mentioned how pregnant ladies can see just a midwife or go between her and a doctor. Today I had my first doctors appointment. I found out that the woman I had chosen for my doctor recently had a baby of her own so I saw another lady, Dr. Tine (pronounced like Tina – people are quite informal here and go by first names), and I really liked her. It’s so relaxed here, pregnancy is so normal. Tine didn’t do anything different from Kari Janne, my midwife.

Baby is upside down, like s/he is supposed to be in the next 6 weeks. The heartbeat is nice and strong and s/he is getting nice a big. Nice for baby, not my favorite thing though of course I’m glad s/he is healthy. I’ve been taking iron supplements for the last month and happily that has improved.

A couple weeks after birth the midwife will visit (or we’ll go to her) and around 6 weeks I’ll probably see Tine again. They don’t do vaccinations on babies here until three months (thank goodness) so that won’t start for our munchkin until we are stateside. But Tine will be able to give me a pill prescription that I can take home with me. Is that TMI? I don’t really think so.

Doctor visits are free for pregnant ladies and new mom’s, kid’s up to 7 years old, and people with certain diseases. I’m sure there are downsides but so far I am lovin’ this health care system. I hope the transition isn’t too hard for us.
