Easter
It’s been a while since I’ve written much about us. Today I am recuperating from a weekend trip to Tim’s grandparents’ for Easter. Gigi and Papa Hegeman live in State College, PA. Tim’s mom drove up Friday afternoon and after a really good dinner at Friendly’s (they have revamped!), we carpooled north. I had been afraid a long drive would be really unpleasant but it wasn’t so bad. We got on the road at 7pm and I entertained Sara Ellen for two hours. We did get antzy around 8:30, almost bedtime and finally made a pit stop near York, PA around 9pm. After that Sara Ellen soon fell asleep. We arrived around 11pm, Sara Ellen woke up just beforehand and we visited a little before bed.
Saturday, we went to the Agricultural Arena of Penn State. We were getting snow showers, and as we parked on a field, snow was piling up. It was windy and cold so we added the sleeping bag to the stroller and quickly added the clear weather cover to keep the wind off Sara Ellen. I don’t know if it’s the cold added on, but she really doesn’t like the wind, if we are outside or in the car and open windows let it in.
We expected a petting zoo type thing. There were several animals, including goats, a rabbit, alpaca, tiger, and horses (large and small), but also many tables asking for donations to save and support animals. Sara Ellen didn’t want to touch the uncaged animals. She was more interested in the dogs and balloons. There was also a children’s area for crafts and egg hunting, which we missed.
Back at Gigi and Papa’s, we had lunch and then had to give Sara Ellen some encouragement for her nap. She fell asleep and we watched a show on Tim’s laptop, sharing the earphones. Eventually we fell asleep too, thank goodness, because I had been yawning but napless for days. By the time we woke up, it was almost time for dinner! We had awesome lasanga and ice cream. After some play time (Jan brought Sara Ellen a fun kitchen set which she has been enjoying since), we all watched Narnia on DVD. It was new for me watching Gigi and Papa learning all these technologies, adding attachments to email, using a DVD player, and wireless headsets. My mother’s parents had a computer at one time but that was a while ago before we had internet, and they just watched movies on tape.
On Sunday, we had a nice breakfast before driving to church. Sara Ellen was in no mood to sit still, so when the service started Tim took her to the entryway. It warm enough and closed in so she could walk around and talk but Tim could still hear the service. Halfway through I joined them. An usher found these neat bible character dolls with a book of the character’s story strapped to their back. Then we spent a little time in fellowship with the church members as Gigi and Papa showed us off to their friends. After packing, we had lunch at a local restaurant’s Easter Dinner Buffet. Our table was round and in a corner. I chose a chair on the outside thinking that would be easier for some reason, big mistake. Two people who couldn’t seem to help themselves, stuck their faces in our space to comment on Sara Ellen’s cuteness and talk to her, ugg.
She was falling asleep before we left and slept for a while, almost until we made our pit stop. We found a Sheetz where I got a jr. burger. It was so small and hit the spot. Sara Ellen enjoyed some of it too. It was Jan’s first visit to Sheetz. Tim and I agreed it was pretty swanky compared to others. It kind of looked like a diner from outside with a wood exterior and red lights. Inside it had a sitting area which I’ve never seen in a Sheetz.
Sara Ellen is blowing kisses and waving bye-bye now, to almost everyone, including the register person at Sheetz and even the nurse today when she got her 2nd hep vaccine. We managed pretty well for the rest of the trip, stopping in Crofton to drop off Jan and to visit her friend Barbara and granddaughter Lauren. We also stopped a Safeway for dinner but I think I filled my stomach over the weekend and just had something small instead of the Boston Market frozen dinner I found.
Next up, we leave Thursday morning at nap time and drive to Lynchburg for the dance concert. We’re staying in the Mueller’s house while they are away and I’ll get to hang out with Sara!!
