Nightime Pediatrics

I/we went to Nighttime Pediatrics for the first time yesterday and am happy to say I am very pleased with the care we received.

Sara Ellen had her first fever Tuesday afternoon after getting some vaccinations but it only lasted a few hours. It only was up to 100.3 so we let her body fight it instead of using Infant Tylenol.

Her second fever came on Friday night. While watching TV she napped and woke up around 9. She was a little shaky, warm, splotchy and seemed confused, though pretty happy. We took her temperature and she was 102.7 so we called 1-800-MD-Nurse recommended by her pediatrician’s phone recording. We were advised to give her a lukewarm bath and Tylenol if she got up to 104 and get checked out next day, that was about 10pm. We woke up around 2am and she was really warm so we gave her the Tylenol. At 10am she was 103.8 so she got some more and Tim made an afternoon appointment at Nighttime Pediatrics.

Though it took a while, we arrived early at noon and left after 3, the care was really good. The nurses were gentle and sweet, and the doctor also gentle and kind. They use a catheter, did a blood test by pricking her toe and took a mouth culture. We watched Toy Story 2 while we waited for results. The doctor said her blood count was high showing she was fighting an infection and the she showed signs of urinary tract infection. She was given an injection and we were advised to see her doctor next day. It was a long day.

Today was just as long, maybe longer. Tim made a 12:15 appointment with the pediatrician and on our way there we signed up for Cingular mobile service (though at the moment Tim is having signal issues so he’s gone to solve it). So I now have a phone number which I’ll send to friends and family by email. At the doctor’s office we waited for a little while before going back. She got weighed and her temperature taken. We waited in a room and didn’t see the doctor till after 1pm. He got to us and checked her ears and mouth for other signs of illness but by noninvasive tests, she’s fine. Her blood test from yesterday wasn’t through yet but that should have come through by now. He also prescribed more medicine and asked me to get a sonogram taken to look at her kidneys - UTI can cause problems there. The sleepy girl took naps while I drove. I picked up Wendy’s before meeting Tim at Men’s Wearhouse to get a new suit for Sunday. He had already been to Hair Cuttery, gotten lunch and renewed his license. Then I got the prescriptions filled and had to pay full price!

I think I’m taking a break from ballet tonight.
